How to Spring Clean Your Closet

Hi Friends!  Spring is around the corner, even though some of us still have snow on the ground.  One of my favorite things to do this time of year (yes I like to start early), is to spring clean my closet.  It gets me excited to start thinking about the warmer months ahead where I can hang up my winter coat and hat, and wear my tees and sandals.

In today's post, I am sharing my Top 10 Personal Stylist Tips for organizing and editing your closet.  These are the "rules" I follow and that I use when I edit my clients' wardrobes.  I'm still amazed by this statistic, "On average a woman spends 6 months of her life choosing what to wear".

Still need more help editing your closet, email me here to learn how I can help you.

Have a great week and thanks for reading, xx Erica

1. HANGERS

Good hangers are a must. One of the first things I do in someone's closet is make their hangers as uniform as possible and have them pointing in the same direction.  I get rid of all dry cleaning hangers and wire hangers, because they can ruin your clothes.  Good hangers not only protect your clothes, they also make things in your closet feel more luxe and special. If you have the space I recommend wooden ones.  They come in various stains and I love when they match the finish of your closet.  I also have these wooden hangers here and here for my 3 year old daughter and highly recommend them.  If you don't have the space, velvet hangers are a great alternative.

Personal Stylist Tip: I use these exact hangers and they are perfect for hanging tanks and jeans and even dresses.

Tosnail 10 Pack wooden clip hangers $16.99 available at Amazon

Nature Smile Pack of 16 white wooden hangers $25.19 available at Amazon

Pack of 50 velvet hangers $21.99 (make sure to also get the velvet hanger clips here)

2. HANDBAG DISPLAY

If you have multiple handbags but not the shelf space to display them, use shelf dividers and shapers to protect them and still make them accessible for everyday use.

Personal Stylist Tip: Ideally, you want to have a divider between each bag.

Clear shelf dividers $10.99 each available at The Container Store

Clear shelf dividers $10.99 each available at The Container Store

Innies Quilted purse shapers $14.99-$29.99 depending on size available at

3. DRAWERS

Your drawers should only be for undergarments, socks, pjs and athletic wear.

Simple Houseware 4 Piece divider set $14.87 available at Amazon

Cedar adjustable drawer organizers $9.99 each available at The Container Store

4. LIGHTING

Don't overlook good lighting.  I can't tell you how often I go in someone's closet and the lighting needs to be improved.  If you can't see what you have, how can you get dressed easily each day?  While changing your whole lighting in your closet may require an electrician, there are some simple affordable solutions.  Sometimes it's as easy as changing the lightbulbs in your closet or adding lights like the ones below.

PeakPlus LED Motion sensor 3 pack stick on lights $19.99 available at Amazon

SOAIY Touch Light Battery powered stick on LED lights $14.29 available at Amazon

5. JEWELRY

When it comes to jewelry, you'll only wear what you remember you have.  Whatever pieces you decide to keep, make sure they are visible and easily accessible.  I also have this jewelry case here for when I travel and I love it.

MESHA Stackable 4 pack jewelry organizer trays $15.99 available at Amazon

brotrade 80 Pocket hanging jewelry organizer $11.99 (comes in variety of colors) available at Amazon

6. SHOES

Ideally, if you have the closet space your shoes should be out of boxes and displayed on shelves.

12-Pair shoe organizer $39.99 each (this photo has 4 organizers stacked)

available at The Container Store

mDesign Stackable shoe storage bin pack of 6 $69.99, pack of 4 $49.99 and single $15.99

(also come in smaller size for flats here and larger for ankle boots here

available at Amazon

6. LETTING GO

When you walk into your closet the only items that should be there are ones that you love (or at least like), that fit your body now and that you know how to wear.  Everything should be visible and accessible.  With that in mind, it's time to get rid of things you haven't worn in over a year.  I say to my clients, it's okay to have 1 box for "sentimental items", like what you wore on your honeymoon or on your first date with your husband, etc; but ONLY 1 box is the rule.

Extra large storage box $14.99 available at The Container Store

StorageWorks Storage box with lid $26.99 available at Amazon

6. WHERE TO HANG

Group items together into sections in your closet, ie: tops, pants, skirts, dresses...  Organize each section by color from light to dark first, then by style from casual to dressy, and sleeveless to long sleeve.  If you do have shelving that you use for folded items like sweaters, fold no more than 3 in a pile so the ones on the bottom aren't forgotten.

7. BYE BYE DRYCLEANING BAGS

My clients are always surprised when I tell them that dry-cleaning bags (and hangers) can ruin your clothes over time.  The chemicals used for dry-cleaning can stay on the plastic bags and if left on your clothes over time, can break down the fabric.  When you have a special occasion dress or coat that needs protecting, it's best to invest in clear garment bags like the ones below.

PEVA Clear garment bags $8.99- $10.99 each depending on length available at The Container Store

Garment bags 6 pack $19.99 available at Amazon

8. BOOTS

Want to protect the shape of your tall leather boots?  You can use rolled up magazines or any of the boot shapers below.

Cedar boot shapers $49.99 available at The Container Store

Adjustable boot shapers $9.99 (love that you can hang them if you choose)

available at The Container Store

Moneysworth & Best Boot shapers $13.98 (come in a variety of colors) available at Amazon

9. STEAM

Never hang anything in your closet that needs to be steamed, thinking you'll get to it another time.  Keep everything that needs to be steamed in a separate section of your closet and plan a weekly time to steam all of those items before hanging them up.  I highly recommend a standing steamer like the ones below.  It will save you time when getting dressed and so much easier and faster than an iron.  Skip the handheld steamers, I've never found one that actually works.

Pure Enrichment PureSteam Standing steamer $59.99 available at Amazon

AICOK Standing steamer $59.99 available at Amazon

10. CLOTHES THAT LAST

Whatever I want to last but that I don't get dry-cleaned, I wash inside out in a mesh laundry bag in cold water and hang to dry.  That means my good t-shirts, jeans and even my workout clothes.  I also have cedar blocks hanging in my closet like the ones below.  They absorb moisture and humidity protecting against mildew and odor, and they also repel pests like moths and spiders.  Your clothes will last twice as long.

Ollieroo 12 Pack moth protection repellant hang ups $16.99 available at Amazon

Plusmart 5 Pack mesh laundry bags for delicates $6.29 available at Amazon

AmazonBasics Foldable drying rack $19.41 available at Amazon

BINO Silver collapsable drying rack $39.99 (also comes in white) available at Amazon
